A few months ago, in Houston, Texas, a young girl scrolling through Facebook with her mom came across a photo that stopped her heart — it was of a tiny, mangy puppy named Scratchy. Despite his patchy fur and fragile frame, something about him was irresistibly sweet. But the story behind the picture was heartbreaking.

Scratchy had been placed on the euthanasia list at a local shelter. He was suffering from a severe skin condition, and with overcrowding and limited resources, his time was quickly running out.

The little girl couldn’t look away.

Her heart broke knowing that this sweet, helpless puppy was facing the end of his short life simply because he needed care. Right then and there, she made a decision: she had to save him.

As she realized who he was, she dropped to her knees, tears flowing freely. Her backpack was still on. Scratchy bounded out of his crate and began licking the tears from her face as if he understood everything.
