She opened the emergency door and began helping passengers escape. In the final, brutal minutes, she used her own body to shield three terrified children from bullets.
She didn’t survive.
But more than 350 others did — because of her.
At just 22, Neerja Bhanot became one of aviation’s greatest heroes. She was posthumously awarded India’s highest peacetime honor, the Ashoka Chakra, and her name continues to stand for courage, compassion, and the kind of selfless bravery that changes the world.
