“I Was Terrified”: Good Samaritan Rescues Two Toddlers From Busy Florida Roadway.

What began as an ordinary drive home on a Florida afternoon turned into a moment of terror, instinct, and lifesaving action for one man — and two very young children who wandered into danger without anyone noticing.

John Brittingham was driving southbound in Brevard County on Sunday when something ahead of him didn’t look right. Through the windshield, amid moving traffic, he saw two tiny figures where no one should ever be standing.

Two toddlers were in the roadway.

“At first, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” Brittingham said later. “Then it hit me — those were babies.”

Dashcam footage from Brittingham’s vehicle shows the chilling scene. Cars move along the busy road as two little girls, believed to be between two and three years old, stand exposed in the middle of traffic. One of them is already dangerously close to passing vehicles.

Brittingham didn’t hesitate.

He slammed on his brakes, pulled over, and jumped out of his car. With one hand raised to signal drivers to stop, he ran toward the children, his heart racing as cars slowed just feet away.

“I was terrified,” he said. “If anything would have happened to them, the rest of my life would have been ruined.”

In a matter of seconds, Brittingham reached the first child and scooped her up. He immediately turned back for the second toddler, lifting her into his arms as well. The entire rescue took only moments — but for Brittingham, it felt endless.

“It took maybe six seconds,” he said. “Those were the longest six seconds of my life.”

The dashcam video captures the rawness of the moment — the children lifting their tiny arms, the sudden stillness of stopped traffic, and a stranger acting on pure instinct.

“My adrenaline spiked like nothing I’ve ever felt,” Brittingham said. “By the time I got home later, I had a migraine. I was completely drained for the rest of the day.”

But once the girls were safe from the roadway, Brittingham knew the most important task still remained: finding their family.

The toddlers were too young to explain where they came from. They couldn’t give names or addresses — only gestures and soft sounds. Holding them close, Brittingham began searching nearby homes, knocking on doors and calling out for anyone who might be missing children.

“I was yelling for somebody, anybody,” he said. “They weren’t telling me anything. All they could do was point and say, ‘Ohh.’”

Eventually, Brittingham noticed an open back gate at a nearby Airbnb. He walked around the property, calling out again. Inside, he finally found the children’s family — an elderly couple and a young woman — completely unaware that the toddlers had slipped away.

“The gate was open,” Brittingham explained. “That’s how they got out.”

The family was immediately overwhelmed with shock and relief.

“They were apologizing over and over,” he said. “I just told them I was glad I could get the girls back to them. They were out in the road, and it could’ve ended so differently.”

Brittingham chose not to call police, saying his only concern was making sure the children were safely reunited with their family. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed they received no reports or calls related to the incident.

For Brittingham, a father and grandfather with five children and grandchildren of his own, the experience hit close to home.

“It happens fast,” he said. “That’s what people don’t realize. One open gate. One moment. And everything can change.”

He hopes the frightening incident serves as a reminder for parents and caregivers everywhere.

“Watching kids closely isn’t optional,” Brittingham said. “It’s everything.”

Thanks to his quick thinking and willingness to act, what could have become a tragedy ended instead in relief — and a powerful reminder that sometimes, the difference between disaster and safety is one person choosing to stop.

For two toddlers who wandered into harm’s way, and for a man who will never forget those six seconds, the outcome was nothing short of a miracle.
