In the sprawling wilderness of South Africa’s MalaMala Game Reserve, tucked within the vast borders of Kruger National Park, a newborn calf has captured the world’s attention. Safari ranger Tim Jansen van Vuuren, who was lucky enough to witness her, could hardly believe his eyes. “This is one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever seen in the wild,” he said. “It’s not something you’ll find in textbooks. It’s rare, it’s beautiful, and it feels like a miracle.”
Her unusual appearance is the result of a condition called leucism—a genetic trait that causes a partial loss of pigmentation. Unlike albinism, which affects the eyes and can cause vision problems, leucism simply lightens the skin, leaving the animal otherwise healthy. For this calf, it means her rosy skin will remain with her for life, setting her apart forever from the elephants around her.
