For most of her life, Lauren Maners had been deeply involved in fostering and rehabilitating animals. Her home had always been a safe haven for those who needed extra love and care — especially the sick, the injured, and the overlooked. But as her due date approached, Lauren made a decision she thought was final:

It was time to pause.

“I had a long history in fostering and rehabilitating animals,” Lauren explained. “But when I got toward the end of my pregnancy, I decided that it was time to take a break… the animals I usually fostered needed a lot of attention, and I knew I wouldn’t have the time once the baby arrived.”

She was firm. Focused. Ready to shift her energy fully to preparing for motherhood.

But fate, as it often does, had other plans.

Enter Dove.

That very same morning — the one when Lauren declared her break from fostering — she and her husband were driving home from breakfast when something caught her eye: a small, injured cat, huddled in an empty parking lot.

They pulled over.

As Lauren approached, she immediately noticed two things: the cat was clearly hurt… and she was also pregnant.

“I knew she was in bad shape,” Lauren said. “And I felt a connection to her right away — we were both very pregnant. It was like seeing a reflection of myself in need.”

Using leftover food to coax her closer, Lauren gently wrapped the cat in her jacket and brought her to the vet. The news was what she expected: Dove was malnourished, scared, and had been living as a stray for most of her life.

And yet — despite the earlier vow she had made — Lauren couldn’t walk away.

Two Pregnant Moms, One Shared Journey

Lauren named the cat Dove, and brought her home.

She set up a safe, cozy space where Dove could rest and recover, and while the initial plan was simply to help her through her pregnancy, something more began to unfold — a quiet, beautiful bond between two soon-to-be moms.

“She would follow me everywhere,” Lauren recalled. “She loved to sit outside with me in the mornings. I’d rub her belly, she’d rub against me. We’d eat breakfast together. We were both waiting for the same thing.”

As the days passed, Lauren and Dove grew more inseparable. It wasn’t just companionship — it was solidarity, shared understanding between two mothers moving through the same phase of life. One with hands. One with paws. But both deeply connected.

Then Came the Births — Just Hours Apart

Lauren eventually went into labor and gave birth to her daughter, Kylie. When she returned home from the hospital, she found a surprise waiting:

Dove had given birth, too.

“They were very possibly born at the same time,” Lauren said.

Dove had six beautiful, healthy kittens. And just like that, the house was now home to two brand-new families.

Babies Growing Up — Together

As the days turned into weeks, Kylie and the kittens grew side by side. While one learned to grasp and smile, the others learned to pounce and play. And every day, their connection deepened.

“When Kylie was about five weeks old,” Lauren shared, “she began noticing the kittens when I’d carry her in with me to help feed them. The kittens were curious about her, too. They’d sniff her fingers, nuzzle her toes.”

It was a home full of softness, discovery, and the kind of joy that only comes from the pure innocence of new life.

Saying Goodbye, But Not Forever

After months of nurturing Dove and her kittens, it was time for Lauren to do what foster parents eventually must — find them their forever homes.

And she did — carefully and lovingly.

“Luckily, the mother cat went to live with a friend of mine, so I still get updates on her,” Lauren said. “And several of the kittens were adopted by people I know, so Kylie and I can still visit them.”

They may not live under the same roof anymore, but the story they share is unforgettable.

A Moment That Changed Everything

Lauren never expected to foster again while pregnant — let alone foster a pregnant cat. But something about Dove changed her heart. And in return, Dove gave Lauren and her daughter a gift no one could have predicted: a first chapter of life wrapped in warmth, connection, and compassion.

Two moms.
Two births.
Two families.
All woven together by one unexpected encounter on the side of the road.

And neither Lauren nor Kylie would trade it for anything.
