Remembering Marine Corporal John R. Stalvey: A True American Hero.

Marine Corporal John R. Stalvey was only 22 years old when he made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. His bravery and dedication to his fellow Marines continue to resonate as an example of unwavering courage and sacrifice. On this day in 2005, during a combat operation in Iraq as part of Operation Iron Fist, Cpl. Stalvey lost his life in a tragic attack while serving in the town of Karabilah.

Cpl. Stalvey was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. He was an integral member of his unit, known for his sharp skills, immense dedication, and his passion for training others. As an IED trainer, he had a unique and vital role in preparing his fellow Marines for the dangers they would face. He taught them how to identify and avoid the deadly threat of improvised explosive devices, which were a constant danger in the areas they patrolled.

His role as an IED trainer was crucial. Every Marine who served alongside him was profoundly impacted by the knowledge and expertise he imparted. His lessons saved lives—there is no doubt that many Marines, who later faced these threats in combat, owed their survival to Cpl. Stalvey’s rigorous training. The blast killed him instantly, taking away a man who had already given so much to his country and to the Marines under his care.
