Meet George the Lion and the Man Who Became His Best Friend.

In the heart of Gauteng, South Africa, a remarkable friendship has been quietly thriving for over a decade—between a man and a lion. Shandor Larenty, the head of animal husbandry at the Lion and Safari Park, first met George when the lion was just a tiny, wobbly cub. From the very beginning, a bond formed, one that would grow stronger with every passing year.

Today, George is a majestic 10-year-old, weighing over 550 pounds, the head of his own pride. Yet, despite his power and dominance, he still makes time for the man who raised him. Shandor and George share moments of play, affection, and even cuddle sessions that seem almost surreal—two creatures from completely different worlds, united by trust and care.

“It’s like watching a child grow up,” Shandor says, eyes glinting with affection. “Exactly the same feeling. And George chooses to spend time with me as much as I do with him.”

George has a personality all his own. He is social, yet he values solitude—a trait Shandor relates to deeply. “It’s amazing to see that when I arrive, he’ll leave the rest of the pride and walk over. Lions have good days and bad days, just like us. If he doesn’t come running, I know it’s just not his day.”

Every day, Shandor gives George the care and attention that he loves. Massages, brushing, foot rubs—these are the small rituals that strengthen their bond. George’s favorite? The fly repellent that Shandor prepares himself. The lion rolls around like a kitten, luxuriating in every moment.

But this friendship is more than playful. It is also protective. One day, while Shandor was tending to George’s son, another lion attacked unexpectedly. In the chaos, George sprang into action. Shandor recalls, “Out of the blue, George came running and knocked me to the side. His lioness joined from the left, grabbing the other lion, and together they protected me. It gave me time to get away.”

It is rare to witness such loyalty and mutual understanding between human and beast. But in the case of Shandor and George, it is clear: trust, love, and respect can bridge even the wildest divides.

From cubhood to king of the pride, George’s journey has been intertwined with Shandor’s care, patience, and companionship. And while lions are creatures of instinct, George has made one exception—a lifelong friendship with a human.
