From “Never Liked Dogs” to Best Friends on the Road: A Woman’s Unlikely Journey With Butch the Street Dog.

Heike Pirngruber never pictured herself as a dog person. In fact, after years of being chased during her travels, she had grown to actively dislike them. But fate has a way of rewriting the stories we tell ourselves—and in Heike’s case, it came with four paws, a scruffy coat, and a stubborn will to live.

For decades, Heike worked behind the camera for ZDF, Germany’s biggest broadcast station. But 12 years ago, she traded the studio lights for the open road, determined to explore the world on her own terms. Her wanderlust has since carried her across 104 countries and every inhabited continent. Along the way, she has traveled by motorbike, canoe, and even tuk-tuk—but her greatest adventure didn’t arrive until she met Butch.

It began in a modest beach hut in Baja, California, where she was taking a break in 2020. One evening, as she grilled chicken for dinner, a timid stray named Max appeared at her door. Encouraged by her friend Ronny, she let him stay. The next day, Max returned—this time with two canine friends. Slowly, their gentle presence softened her guarded heart, dissolving the fear she had carried since childhood.

That shift prepared her for the moment that would change everything. Not long after, Heike encountered a litter of seven neglected puppies, all crawling with fleas and destined to be discarded by their owners. One small pup with golden fur and trusting eyes caught her gaze. Despite the challenges of life on the road, she knew instantly: this little one was hers.

“I never really liked dogs when I was a kid,” she admitted. “But the first moment I had little Butch in my arms and knew he was mine now, I couldn’t believe how I felt.”

From that day forward, Heike and Butch have been inseparable.

Together, they spent three years journeying across the Americas. They walked through U.S. states, rode a motorbike in Arizona and Mexico, canoed in New York and Vermont, and rattled across Chile and Argentina in a tuk-tuk. With Butch perched in the back seat—sometimes basking in the sun, other times curled in the shade—he became a quiet symbol of resilience and joy.

Their adventures have spanned icy mountains, vast deserts, and bustling cities. And with every mile, the bond between them has only deepened. “He’s my best friend. I love this guy to death,” Heike said. “Australian cattle dogs are a tough breed—they’re made for the outdoors. Butch only knows life on the road, and that’s how we connect every single day.”

Last year, the pair continued their odyssey, flying to Madrid before walking east through Spain, Andorra, France, and Italy. A boat carried them to Greece, where they pressed onward into new lands. Their plans are fluid, shaped by instinct and the rhythm of the road, with Turkey, India, or even Mongolia shimmering on the horizon.

“I choose where we go mainly day by day,” Heike explained. “Sometimes we want to get away from civilization and be alone. Other times, I’ll sit in a square and reach out for connection—either in person or through my phone.”

What began as a woman who “never liked dogs” has blossomed into one of the most extraordinary partnerships on the planet: a traveler and her street dog, bound not by destination but by love, trust, and a shared hunger for the unknown.

If you ever cross paths with a woman striding forward, and by her side a golden-furred dog with bright eyes and a life lived fully—know you’ve just met Butch, one of the world’s most well-traveled souls.
