A Ziploc Bag Full of Love: How an 8-Year-Old Taught Me the True Meaning of Giving.

This week, my younger kids have been attending Vacation Bible School at a local church. Along with songs, crafts, and stories, they’ve been learning about serving others—especially the homeless. They’ve been bringing home flyers, reminders, and little lessons about food and donations for a local ministry. My son, in particular, has been relentless about it. Every day, he reminds me, “Don’t forget the offering!”

This morning, I received a message that completely stopped me in my tracks. My son had sent a picture from our family phone while I was away from the house. In it, there was a small Ziploc bag filled with granola bars, a few tiny snacks, and some loose change. Along with the picture was one simple message: “Is this good?”

Confused, I asked, “Good for what?” I had no idea what he was doing with a little bag of snacks and coins.

His reply came as a short voice message. Three little words that immediately brought me to tears: “For the offering.”

For him, that tiny Ziploc bag was everything he could give. The snacks were his favorites, the coins were the ones he had saved, and yet, in his mind, this was enough. This small offering—a few humble things from an 8-year-old boy—was going to make a difference. It was his way of helping, of loving, of giving.

In that moment, I realized something profound. This is what goodness looks like. Pure, uncalculated, innocent. It isn’t measured in size or value, but in intention. My little boy, who owns so little in this world, gathered everything he could, carefully packed it, and entrusted it to something greater than himself.

So when he asked me, “Is this good?”, I knew my answer without hesitation. Yes, baby. This is so, so good.

God bless the little ones who understand love, generosity, and kindness in ways that adults sometimes forget. They remind us what truly matters.

Sometimes, the purest acts of love come in a Ziploc bag. 🤍
