Today, a gentleman came by the kennel to pick out a puppy. The moment I saw his hat, I recognized something familiar—it was a sign of his service, a silent testament to sacrifices most of us can barely imagine.
After he chose his new companion, I asked him quietly, “Are you over there?”
He nodded and began to share a piece of his story—a harrowing experience with an IED that changed his life forever. At just 25 years old, the blast caused a stroke that would mark him for life.
He told me he’d be back in a few weeks to pick up the pup and bring the rest of the money.
My response?
“You don’t owe me anything.”
Because truly, he’s paid enough already.
