Sometimes, life finds a way to turn grief into hope, loss into love. For Anjie Lynchard and Mary Ann Carroll of Columbia, Maryland, this was no ordinary story—it was a miracle in motion.
Fifteen years ago, Anjie moved across the street from Mary Ann. Their sons, Jared and Phillip, became inseparable, spending endless afternoons biking, fishing, and chasing frogs. But three years later, Anjie’s family moved away, and the families drifted apart, keeping only faint contact through social media.
Years passed. Jared grew into a young man, proud to serve in the Marines. Then, tragedy struck: 23-year-old Jared died suddenly, leaving Anjie heartbroken and Mary Ann devastated alongside her friend.
In the wake of grief, Mary Ann came to Anjie’s home, offering condolences and a prayer shawl. It was during this visit that Anjie learned of her friend’s own struggle—Mary Ann had been battling illness for three years, now facing end-stage liver disease, with a transplant as her only hope.
Anjie prayed for a miracle, not realizing that she herself would become that miracle. Months later, she saw Mary Ann’s plea on Facebook, seeking a living liver donor. Without hesitation, Anjie stepped forward. Her faith and love guided her. And when her husband Steve reminded her of a missionary’s words—that out of Jared’s death, new life would be born—Anjie knew what she had to do.
“I realized it was as if Jared was telling me to save her life,” she says.
Testing confirmed it: Anjie was a match. The transplant surgery was scheduled for December 3, 2024, a date that felt divinely orchestrated. Remarkably, the surgery mirrored a sermon Jared had heard exactly one year prior, entitled “The Perfect Plan.” For Anjie, it was confirmation that her son’s spirit guided her hand.
Using a minimally invasive robotic system at Johns Hopkins Hospital, surgeons carefully removed a portion of Anjie’s liver and transplanted it into Mary Ann. The precision of the robotic system meant smaller incisions, less pain, and a faster recovery.
Three months later, Mary Ann thrives. Her renewed life stands as a testament to friendship, faith, and selfless love. Anjie’s generosity not only saved Mary Ann but also allowed someone else to move up the waiting list for a deceased donor liver—an extraordinary ripple of life born from one mother’s courage.
“Everything had to align perfectly: our sons’ friendship, the prayer shawl, Anjie being a match,” Mary Ann reflects. “It feels like God and Jared were part of every step. I keep a photo of Anjie and Jared on my fridge—my angel on Earth and my angel in heaven.”
As Mary Ann looks toward the future, she hopes their story inspires others to become living donors.
“If you can save a life, why wouldn’t you? What greater gift can anyone give?”
