A Heartwarming Encounter: A Child’s Innocence and the Power of Love.

Today, I experienced something that left me deeply moved—a moment that reminded me of why I’ve chosen to serve, not just in the USMC, as part of the State Police, and now as a City Police officer, but in the most human way possible. I was at Chick-fil-A, enjoying a rare quiet moment, when a beautiful young child approached me. He looked up at me, and without hesitation, thanked me for my service.

I wasn’t expecting anything more, but then, he did something that completely took me by surprise. He led me to the counter and bought me a cookie—just a simple gesture of kindness that immediately made me feel grateful. I smiled and thanked him, assuming that would be the end of the interaction. But then, he asked me to wait for a moment, and when he came back, he handed me a gift card.

The child smiled and said it was for me to return to Chick-fil-A again. It was such a simple, yet profoundly thoughtful gesture. He didn’t have to do that; the cookie alone was more than enough. But his act of kindness, the innocence and joy in his face, was something I won’t forget. His gift was a reminder that sometimes the smallest actions have the greatest impact.

What struck me most about this moment wasn’t just the gift—it was the purity of his actions. This child didn’t see the color of my skin. He didn’t see a badge or a uniform filled with any preconceived notions. He simply saw a law enforcement officer, and in his innocent eyes, I was a hero. In a world that is often filled with division, racial tension, prejudice, and discrimination, this child’s love and kindness stood as a stark reminder of the beauty of innocence. He didn’t judge me for my uniform. He didn’t question what I stood for. He just showed me love.

As I stood there, I couldn’t help but reflect on what I had just experienced. Why can’t we, as adults, be more like children? This child didn’t see all the complexities that often divide people—he just saw someone to be kind to, to show appreciation for, without judgment. It made me realize that the world could be a much better place if we approached each other with the same pure heart that children do.

I also want to take a moment to thank this child’s parents. They’ve raised a child who loves and respects everyone, regardless of their race, profession, or background. In a world where negativity and division often take center stage, it’s incredibly heartwarming to see a child who is untainted by hate and who has been taught to embrace others with love and respect. His parents have given him the foundation to see the good in people, and I applaud them for that.

I know not everyone has the same perspective when it comes to law enforcement, and I understand that. But it’s days like today—moments like this—that remind me why I wear this badge and uniform. It’s not just about responding to calls or being the “tough guy” in uniform; it’s about the people we encounter, the little gestures of kindness that remind us of the humanity in all of us, and the reminder that God is with us in every moment. This little boy, with his innocent heart, reminded me of all the people who do love, honor, and respect the badge, even when it seems like the world is divided.

This simple act of kindness, so pure and genuine, will stay with me for a long time. It was a moment where my faith in the goodness of people was reaffirmed. It’s easy to get caught up in the negativity and challenges of our profession, but today, a small child gave me a powerful reminder of the love and grace that still exists in this world. The joy, the love, and the humility he shared with me are exactly why we continue to serve.

So, to that child—thank you. Your kindness means more than you will ever know. And to his parents, thank you for raising such an incredible young soul.

I know there are people who may hate police officers, and I understand that perspective. But it’s moments like today, these small acts of love and kindness, that God often uses to remind us of His presence in our lives. It’s another “Best Day Ever” for me.
