A Kind Hand: How Officer Libetti Helped My Daughter Love School.

Starting school can be a challenge for many children, but for my daughter Olivia, it felt like an impossible hurdle. Since the very beginning of the school year, mornings had been a struggle. Sometimes from the moment she opened her eyes, she would cry—uncontrollably, almost hysterically. The thought of leaving home and entering the school building was overwhelming for her.

Walking to the front door of Rice Elementary School often became an emotional battle. Olivia clung to me, pleading for me to take her home, sobbing with every step closer to the entrance. Staff sometimes had to help me get her through the door, but nothing seemed to make it easier. Each morning was heartbreaking, filled with tears, anxiety, and fear.

Then came Officer Brian Libetti, a member of the Evesham Township Police and the officer assigned to Rice Elementary. One morning, noticing Olivia’s distress, he gently asked what was wrong. I explained that she was scared and didn’t really want to go to school. Without hesitation, this kind man extended a simple, yet profound offer: he asked Olivia if he could walk her to class.

No more tears: Evesham officer calms student's fears

To my surprise, Olivia took his hand willingly. From that moment, Officer Brian became her guide, her protector, and her friend. Each day, he walks her to her classroom, chatting with her along the way, making her feel safe, secure, and confident. His warmth and patience transformed her mornings completely.

It’s hard to describe the difference one person can make, but within a week and a half of Officer Brian’s support, Olivia’s tears disappeared. She no longer clings to me at the door, no longer begs to stay home. Instead, she runs ahead happily, eager to see her new friend, the officer who now brings comfort and reassurance to her school mornings.

Every morning, Officer Brian stands at the entrance, greeting all the children with a smile and a friendly “Good morning,” but he always makes a special effort for Olivia. His dedication reminds me that kindness, empathy, and patience can change lives—even the small lives of young children struggling with fear.

I am endlessly grateful for Officer Brian. His actions are a powerful reminder that sometimes it takes one thoughtful, compassionate adult to turn fear into confidence, tears into smiles, and anxiety into joy. Only my Olivia could need a police escort to start second grade—but thanks to Officer Brian, she does so happily, hand in hand with someone who cares deeply for her well-being.

Every parent hopes their child will feel safe and loved at school, and thanks to Officer Libetti, Olivia does. This story is a celebration of the extraordinary difference one caring person can make in the life of a child.
