Wanted Forever: Our Journey to Becoming a Family.

My husband and I both have white skin and blue eyes. But 14 years ago, our lives changed forever when we were blessed to adopt a little girl from Kazakhstan—a beautiful baby with tan skin, almond-shaped brown eyes, and a smile that could light up the darkest room.

I remember the day we first brought her home. She was barely 10 months old, full of curiosity and innocence, unaware of the world’s judgments and assumptions. We were a new family, learning to navigate this beautiful, uncharted chapter of our lives together.

That evening, we went to a restaurant to enjoy a simple meal together. Excited to share our first outing as a family, we were met instead with a comment that stung more than we expected. Our waitress approached to take our order and, without a pause, asked, “What?! Didn’t her Mom want her?”

Time seemed to stop for a moment. I looked down at our daughter, her tiny hands reaching for my fingers, her eyes wide and trusting. My heart ached—not for her, but for the ignorance and insensitivity in those words. I replied firmly, “Yes. I want her very much.”

And I was grateful—grateful that she was too young to understand, too young to hear a suggestion that she might not be wanted. Because the truth is, she was the piece of our hearts we had been waiting for all along. She was wanted, deeply and completely, from the very first moment we knew she existed.

Over the years, our bond has only grown stronger. We have faced the challenges of blending cultures, of navigating questions from the world about family that looks different, and the quiet moments of doubt that sometimes creep in. But each day, she reminds us why every step of this journey was worth it. Her laughter, her hugs, her little quirks—they are the heartbeats of our home.

Being a parent to her has taught us lessons we could never have imagined. We’ve learned that love transcends skin color, that family is not defined by biology but by the heart, and that the world may sometimes misunderstand, but that doesn’t diminish the beauty of a bond forged in choice and devotion.

Today, she is growing into a young woman full of strength, grace, and joy. We are endlessly proud of her—not just because she is our daughter, but because she has taught us what unconditional love truly means. She was wanted, she is cherished, and she will always know that she is the center of our world.

No matter what anyone says or assumes, our daughter knows the truth: she is loved, she is wanted, and she belongs—forever and always.
