I have to share a wonderful moment we experienced today—one that completely renewed my faith in simple kindness.
My 83-year-old grandfather and I went to the Home Depot on Rhode Island Avenue in DC. He needed a new spool feed for his trimmer, and I wanted to help him pick the right one. As we browsed the aisles, we met a young man named QuRan. He immediately greeted us warmly and helped my grandfather find exactly what he needed.
After we paid, we headed over to the lawn services kiosk, hoping someone could install the spool feed. Unfortunately, the employee there told us that the only person who knew how to do it was on lunch break and wouldn’t be back for another hour. My grandfather looked disappointed—he’s always eager to get things done, and waiting around for an hour wasn’t part of the plan.
We were about to give up and leave when QuRan reappeared, almost as if he’d been keeping an eye out for us. He noticed our hesitation and asked, “Do you need some help?” I explained our situation, expecting him to just point us to someone else. But instead, he smiled and said, “I can help you with that.”
It was clear he probably had other tasks waiting for him, but none of that mattered in that moment. He took the trimmer, knelt down right there, and began installing the new feed. What struck me most was how he didn’t just fix it for us—he taught my grandfather how to do it himself, step by step, making sure he understood every part of the process.
My grandfather asked a lot of questions, sometimes the same one twice, but QuRan never lost his patience. He answered with respect, kindness, and genuine care. When my grandfather tried to offer him something in return for his time, QuRan simply shook his head, gave us a friendly nod, and walked away quietly—no fanfare, no expectation of thanks.
It may seem like a small act, but to us, it meant the world. These are the moments that often go unnoticed—the acts of quiet generosity that make a real difference.
So today, I just want to make sure that everyone knows how incredible QuRan is. People like him are the reason kindness still feels alive in the world. He deserves every bit of recognition for the compassion and respect he showed to my grandfather.
