The Day a Dolphin Asked for Help: Enzo Mallorca’s Extraordinary Encounter Beneath the Waves.
It was a clear, serene day off the coast of Syracuse, Italy. The legendary Italian free diver Enzo Mallorca was out at sea, sharing the tranquil beauty of the ocean with his daughter, Rossana. As always, the water felt like home — a place of peace, silence, and deep connection to the natural world.
Enzo slipped beneath the surface, descending into the familiar blue when he felt a sudden tap on his back. Startled, he turned — and found himself face-to-face with a dolphin.
At first, Enzo thought it was just a playful nudge. Dolphins are known for their curiosity and friendliness, often approaching divers out of sheer joy. But this time was different. The dolphin wasn’t playing. It was trying to say something.
It swam around him urgently, then dove downward — not quickly, but deliberately, as if inviting Enzo to follow.
He did.
At around 12 feet below the surface, Enzo saw the reason for the dolphin’s distress. Another dolphin — female — was entangled in an abandoned fishing net. She was struggling, visibly exhausted, her movements growing weaker by the second.
Dolphins, like humans, are mammals. They cannot breathe underwater — only hold their breath. They can survive submerged for up to ten minutes, but after that, they begin to sink, unable to rise without help.
Realizing the urgency, Enzo quickly signaled to his daughter on the boat above to throw him a diving knife. Seconds later, blade in hand, he and Rossana worked together, cutting through the knotted lines of the net.
Within minutes, they freed the dolphin. As it rose toward the surface, it let out a sound Enzo would later describe as an “almost human cry” — a wail of relief, exhaustion, and life returning.
The freed dolphin was barely conscious. Enzo and Rossana supported it gently, helping guide it up toward the sunlight. Another dolphin — the male, the one who had first tapped Enzo — joined them, swimming protectively alongside his mate.
As the group surfaced, something miraculous happened.
The female, still dazed, suddenly began to stir. And then — right before their eyes — she gave birth.
The baby dolphin slipped into the world, taking its first breath of air at the surface of the sea. It was a moment of pure wonder.
The male dolphin swam in a slow circle, then approached Enzo. In a tender, almost ceremonial motion, it touched its nose to Enzo’s cheek — a kiss, a thank you, a gesture of unspeakable gratitude. Then the dolphin family swam away, disappearing into the endless blue.
Enzo, moved to his core, would later reflect:
“Until a person learns to respect nature and speak to the animal world, he will never know his true role on Earth.”
It was a moment that transcended language — a conversation without words between species. A cry for help, a call answered, and a life saved — not just one, but two.
Nature speaks. We just have to listen.
